Biodiversity Pond

São Marcos da Serra

This is water stewardship made visible. Converting a utilitarian farm dam into a living ecosystem demonstrates that irrigation and biodiversity aren’t competing priorities — they can be designed to work together, especially in a landscape shaped by its relationship with water.

Mitä tarjoamme

Agricultural dam conversion to multifunctional biodiversity wetland — native water lilies, marginal plantings, wildlife habitat, dual-zone irrigation integration, and guest observation deck.

Tietoa

One of Hillside Sanctuary’s three earthen dams is being carefully converted into a multifunctional biodiversity pond — a habitat that serves simultaneously as irrigation reserve, wildlife refuge, scenic focal point for guests, and a demonstration of integrated water stewardship in the Mediterranean climate.

The conversion follows a dual-zone design. A deeper section (1.5–2 metres) maintains the dam’s original irrigation function, with a filtered intake that protects water quality. A shallower ecological zone (30–80 centimetres) has been profiled with gradual slopes to create diverse microhabitats — open water, marginal shallows, muddy edges, and partially submerged shelves where aquatic plants can establish.

Native plantings. We are establishing white water lily (Nymphaea alba) in the deeper zone and marsh pennywort (Hydrocotyle vulgaris) along the margins, alongside endemic Algarve species including Thymus lotocephalus (a rare native thyme) on the dry edges. Reed beds provide structure for invertebrates and nesting sites.

Wildlife. Within the first year, we expect colonisation by dragonflies, damselflies, water beetles, and amphibians. The pond’s position within the property’s pollinator corridor network means it also serves as a water source for bees and other insects. Wading birds, bats, and potentially otters (Lutra lutra) may follow as the ecosystem matures.

Water management. The Algarve experiences severe seasonal drought, making water stewardship critical. The biodiversity pond integrates with our broader water network of 3 dams, 2 springs, and 4 wells. Nutrient loading is monitored monthly to prevent algal dominance, and the separation between ecological and irrigation zones ensures clean water for agriculture.

Guest experience. The pond is a stop on the Water Trail walk. An observation deck allows quiet wildlife watching — early morning and dusk are the best times for amphibians and birds. Interpretation panels explain the conversion process and the role of constructed wetlands in Mediterranean landscape resilience.

This project is aligned with our Water-Smart Agriculture research partnership, contributing long-term data on farm-pond biodiversity in drought-prone Mediterranean landscapes. The €18,000 investment in water stewardship infrastructure is budgeted within the property’s capital plan.
