São Marcos da Serra
The land itself is the experience. Our trails are not about distance or difficulty — they are invitations to slow down, notice, and understand the landscape we are working to regenerate.
— Equipo Hillside Sanctuary
Four self-guided walking trails across 11.4 hectares — cork oak montado, water systems, aloe terraces, and ridge panoramas. Reflective walking, land interpretation, and connection to the Via Algarviana network.
Hillside Sanctuary sits on 11.4 hectares of diverse Algarve terrain, and we have mapped a network of walking trails that take guests through every landscape zone on the property — from the shaded cork oak montado to the open aloe terraces, past the earthen dams and through wildflower meadows alive with pollinators.
The trails are designed for reflective, unhurried walking rather than athletic hiking. Each route is marked with simple waypoints and connects to interpretation points where guests can learn about regenerative land management, water systems, fire resilience, and biodiversity.
The Montado Loop (2.5 km, 45 minutes)
A gentle circuit through the cork oak woodland, passing centenary trees, biodiversity corridors, and seasonal wildflower clearings. Best walked in the golden hour before sunset, when the light through the canopy is extraordinary.
The Water Trail (1.8 km, 30 minutes)
Follows the property’s water infrastructure from the upper spring through the earthen dams to the biodiversity pond. Interpretation points explain drought-conscious water management and the role of each dam in the irrigation network.
The Aloe Walk (1.2 km, 20 minutes)
A short loop through Zone 3 where over 500 aloe vera plants grow in terraced rows. Passes the hydrosol distillation setup and the electroculture demonstration plot. Seasonal — best during harvest months (May–September).
The Ridge Path (3.2 km, 1 hour)
The longest trail, following the property boundary along the highest elevation. Panoramic views across the Serra do Caldeirão hills to the south and the village of São Marcos da Serra below. Connects to the Via Algarviana long-distance trail network.
All trails are self-guided with a printed map provided at check-in. Guided walks with the host are available on request, focusing on land management, ecology, or simply the pleasure of walking in silence among the hills.
