The Algarve's principal university, with faculties of Science, Economics, Tourism, Engineering, and Health. Primary academic partner for Hillside Sanctuary's 10 research collaboration opportunities.

À propos

The Universidade do Algarve (UAlg) is the principal higher education institution in the Algarve region, with campuses in Faro and Portimão serving approximately 9,000 students across a broad range of faculties. Established in 1979, UAlg has developed particular strengths in marine science, tourism studies, environmental engineering, economics, and health sciences, disciplines that reflect the Algarve’s economic base and ecological significance. The university is a consistent contributor to regional development through applied research, graduate placement, and partnerships with local industry and government.

For Hillside Sanctuary, UAlg is the primary academic partner identified across all 10 of our published research collaboration briefs. These briefs span soil science and carbon sequestration measurement, tourism economics and rural visitor behaviour, ecological monitoring of montado ecosystems, water management in semi-arid landscapes, and the economics of regenerative agriculture in southern Portugal. Each brief identifies specific UAlg faculties and research groups whose expertise aligns with the questions we need answered. The Faculty of Sciences and Technology brings capacity in ecology and environmental monitoring. The Faculty of Economics offers tourism impact assessment. The School of Engineering provides technical input on water harvesting and renewable energy systems.

The partnership model we propose is straightforward: Hillside Sanctuary provides a living research site, comprising 11.4 hectares of mixed terrain including cork oak montado, Mediterranean scrubland, olive groves, and irrigated gardens, along with operational data from a functioning agri-tourism business. UAlg provides the methodological rigour, student researchers, and academic supervision needed to generate credible findings. Published results benefit both parties: the university gains field research opportunities and publications, while Hillside Sanctuary gains evidence-based guidance for its land management decisions.

The Algarve faces genuine challenges around water scarcity, wildfire risk, soil degradation, and over-dependence on coastal mass tourism. UAlg’s research programmes address these challenges directly. By partnering with the university, Hillside Sanctuary connects its practical regenerative work to the broader academic effort to understand and respond to these pressures. The relationship is grounded in shared interest rather than sentiment: both parties benefit from collaboration, and the Algarve benefits from the knowledge produced.
