São Marcos da Serra

The Via Algarviana passes through our landscape. Our Ridge Path trail connects directly to the GR13 network, making Hillside Sanctuary a natural stopping point for long-distance hikers exploring the Algarve's interior hills.

Acerca de

Almargem is an environmental non-governmental organisation based in Loulé that has been working on heritage conservation, ecological education, and sustainable development in the Algarve since 1988. Their most significant achievement is the creation and ongoing management of the Via Algarviana (GR13), a 300-kilometre long-distance hiking trail that crosses the entire Algarve from east to west through the rural interior. The trail runs from Alcoutim on the Spanish border to Cabo de São Vicente at the southwestern tip of Europe, passing through the Serra do Caldeirão and Serra de Monchique mountain ranges.

The Via Algarviana passes through São Marcos da Serra, following the hills and valleys that surround Hillside Sanctuary’s property. This proximity is not incidental. The GR13 brings a steady flow of long-distance hikers through our landscape, walkers who are precisely the kind of visitor our project is designed to welcome: people interested in nature, rural culture, and slow travel through the Algarve’s least-visited landscapes. Our Ridge Path trail connects directly to the GR13 network, creating a natural link between the Via Algarviana and the accommodation, meals, and rest that Hillside Sanctuary provides.

Almargem’s work extends beyond trail management. The organisation advocates for the protection of the Algarve’s natural and cultural heritage, runs environmental education programmes, and coordinates volunteer conservation activities. Their long-term presence in the region has built relationships with landowners, municipalities, and other institutions that support rural development and ecological preservation. For Hillside Sanctuary, Almargem represents a natural ally: an organisation whose values and practical work align closely with our own commitment to conservation and responsible tourism.

The Via Algarviana is increasingly recognised as one of Portugal’s most important walking routes, attracting hikers from across Europe. As the trail’s profile grows, so does the demand for quality accommodation along its route. Hillside Sanctuary’s location near the trail, combined with our focus on nature-based hospitality, positions us as a valuable stopover for GR13 walkers. The partnership with Almargem is grounded in this practical reality: they manage the trail that brings hikers to our door, and we provide the hospitality infrastructure that makes the trail viable for multi-day walking.
