This research opportunity addresses the critical challenge of energy transition in rural communities, focusing on remote properties where traditional grid extension is economically unfeasible. The project leverages Portugal’s abundant solar resources and topographic diversity to develop comprehensive renewable energy solutions tailored to rural contexts. Working with the University of Algarve provides access to the diverse landscapes of southern Portugal, from coastal plains to mountainous inland regions, offering ideal conditions for testing both solar and micro-hydro technologies. The research will systematically evaluate energy independence pathways, combining detailed resource assessments with socio-economic analysis to create viable transition models. Collaboration with Instituto Superior Técnico brings advanced engineering expertise in renewable energy systems, while Colorado State University contributes proven experience in rural electrification projects. The Technical University of Denmark adds cutting-edge knowledge in hybrid energy system optimization and smart grid technologies. This multi-institutional approach ensures comprehensive coverage of technical, economic, and social aspects of rural energy transition. The project’s significance extends beyond Portugal, as findings will inform rural electrification strategies across Mediterranean regions and similar geographic contexts globally. Expected outcomes include validated assessment methodologies, optimized hybrid system designs, and policy recommendations for supporting rural energy independence initiatives.
